How to build a social media calendar
Posting three times a week is not a strategy. A setup that ties the content calendar to a goal without burning out the team.
Most brands start on social media by saying "let's post regularly", and three months later they struggle to fill the calendar. The problem is not a lack of discipline; it is that the calendar was never tied to a goal.
Reduce the goal to one sentence
Before building the calendar, write down an answer to this question: what will this account do over the next three months? Build awareness, retain existing customers, or drive direct sales? It cannot do all three at once. If the goal is vague, every post pulls in a different direction and you end up with thirty visuals that do not talk to each other.
Split content into three buckets
The simplest division that works in practice:
- Value: Information the reader can use. Wins followers and builds trust.
- Proof: Work you have done, client results, process shots. Speeds up the buying decision.
- Ask: A direct call — campaign, product, appointment. Should be sparing but clear.
A 5-3-2 ratio is a good starting point. Increasing the ask content drives short-term sales but reduces reach; do not change it without measuring.
Plan monthly, not weekly
Weekly planning keeps the team permanently in emergency mode. At the start of the month, sketch the skeleton of all thirty days: which bucket on which day, in which format. Copy and visuals are then produced against that skeleton in one pass; the daily work drops to publishing and community management.
Keep three days deliberately empty. The agenda shifts, a client result arrives, a video takes off. A calendar that is one hundred percent full collapses at the first surprise.
Set up measurement from the start
Each bucket needs its own metric: saves and shares for value content, profile visits for proof content, link clicks for ask content. Like counts are misleading for all three.
At the end of the month, review the results rather than the calendar: which bucket moved you towards the goal, and which one merely filled space. Adjust next month's ratio accordingly.
